MAURITS CORNELIS ESCHER (1898-1972) was an extremely influential graphic artist during the Modern Art period. He is most famous for hisdistinctive, often mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. As such, his works seemingly capture impossible constructions, architecture, and tessellations. Furthermore, Escher spent his early years after universitygallivanting around Europe to find areas of architecture he could appreciate. He wascaptivated by the architecture specifically found in Italy and Belgium; some of which is reflected in his works. Throughout this time, he mastered his drawing skills which later translated into some of the world's most renowned works of art. Escher's art continues to inspire millions with his keen observation of the world around us and his own fantasies. 96 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE In this print, Escher usestwo-dimensional images to depict objects free of the confines of thethree-dimensional world. The image is of a rectangular three-story building. The upper two floors are open at the sides with the top floor and roofsupported by pillars. From the viewer's perspective, all the pillars on themiddle floor are the same size at both the front and back, but the pillars atthe back are set higher. The viewer also sees by the corners of the top floorthat it is at a different angle than the rest of the structure. All theseelements make it possible for all the pillars on the middle floor to stand atright angles, yet the pillars at the front support the back side of the topfloor while the pillars at the back support the front side. This paradoxalso allows aladder to extend from the inside of the middle floor to the outside of the topfloor. There is a man seated at the foot ofthe building holding an impossible cube. He appears to be constructing it froma diagram of a Necker cubeat his feet with the intersecting linescircled. The window next to him is closed with an iron grille that isgeometrically valid, but practically impossible to assemble. The woman who is about to climb thesteps of the building is modeled after a figure from the right panel ofHeironymus Bosch's1500 triptych The Garden of Earthl Delights.Thispanel is individually titled Hell. A portion of Hell had earlier been recreatedby Escher as a lithograph in 1935.The ridge in the background is part of MorroneMountains inAbruzzo, that Escher had visited several times when living in Italyduring the 1920s and 1930s.
